Écoute / Listen Kadhja Bonet
While planning our upcoming Paris trip we stumbled upon Kadja Bonet, who will be performing down the street from our Airbnb in the 9th arrondissement. From Pitchfork: "Her sound is retro-fitted, but you only have to travel to, say, the experimental jazz-meets-soul-meets-singer-songwriter traditions of 1974 to find her home planet. Her voice twists Roberta Flack’s velvet tone around the archness of Shirley Bassey over creamery-rich strings, producing a sound as familiar as it is haunting."
Regarde / Watch No, a film by Pablo Larrain
M: Watching this film, given the current political climate here in the United States, reminded me of the importance of optimism - especially in the political spectrum. We're currently witnessing the results of voting based on fear, anger and prejudice and the future looks grim. It is important we come together, now more than ever, and work for a more inclusive, supportive and understanding future. No, directed by Pablo Larrain starring Gael García Bernal is a story of how the Chilean citizenry did exactly that in 1988 - by voting No.
Lis / Read The Pictorial Guide to the Tarot: Arthur Edward Waite
L: Written in 1911, this definitive guide to divinatory Tarot is enhanced with the original illustrations from Pamela Colman Smith and draws on the history, tradition and interpretation of the 78 Tarot cards. Occultist A.E. Waite's tome is where I have begun my journey into the magical world of being able to understand and undertake Tarot card readings. After all, who doesn't want a little more insight into their life?
Visite / Visit The Getty Center, Los Angeles
L: Whisking you to the top of Los Angeles via a three-car, cable-pulled hovertrain funicular, The Getty Center offers panoramic views of the skyline and distant ocean via the sculpture gardens and aerial walkways between the grid defined structure, built in the 1990s. The collection housed inside the buildings is pre-20th century European art and is allowed to breathe in bright, airy rooms that allow for plenty of space to view and contemplate.
